What is the Price of Love?
We know the well-known verse “God so loved that world that He gave His only begotten Son…” How much did God love us? How far did He go to reach out to us and save us? The answer is found at Calvary.
As we approach Good Friday and Easter, our hearts are drawn to what our Lord Jesus Christ did for us at Calvary. Mel Gibson’s Movie “The Passion of the Christ” vividly portrays the cruelty and suffering of Jesus. If you haven’t watched this movie, I encourage you to watch it this month.
All four gospels share details of His suffering. Just imagine with me the suffering of our Lord.
- Our Lord was betrayed by one of His own disciples – Judas.
- Then the religious leaders arrested Him.
- They tried to bring false witnesses against him.
- They handed Him over to the soldiers.
- These soldiers stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him (Matt. 27:28).
- They put a crown of thorns on His head (Matt. 27:29).
- They mocked Him (27:29).
- They spat on Him (27:30).
- They struck Him on His head again and again (27:30).
- They slapped His face (John 19:1-3).
- They tied Him and scourged Him with whips – 39 times (Matt. 27:26).
- They blindfolded Him and beat Him (Luke 22:63,64).
- They crucified Him by nailing His hands and His feet to a cross.
- Later they thrust a spear to his side.
That’s the price Jesus paid because of His love for YOU and ME. The very reason Jesus Christ came into our world was to die and give His life for us. He suffered all of this just for YOU. He paid the penalty for OUR sins. Only His death can set the sinner completely free.
Romans 3:25 "For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past "
Matthew 26:28 "for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many."
The lyrics of Don Moen’s song “Think about His love” goes this way.
“Think about His love, think about His goodness,
Think about His grace that's brought us through,
For as high as the heavens above,
So great is the measure of our father's love…”
Think about His grace that's brought us through,
For as high as the heavens above,
So great is the measure of our father's love…”
“I asked Jesus, ‘How much do you love me?’
And Jesus said, ‘This much.’ Then He stretched out His arms and died.”
