What God Knows About You That You Don’t Know
Psalm 139 is a short course in theology, the science of God. In the first six verses the Psalmist is basically saying “God knows everything about me!” He begins with the exclamation: “Oh, Lord, you have searched me and you know me” (v. 1). In these six verses we find 13 personal pronouns—I, me, my.. God knows me personally. At times you may feel lonely and think, “Nobody knows me; nobody cares about me.” Be assured—God knows you intimately. He knows your every action and thought: “You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thoughts afar off” (v. 2). He also knows your words: “before a word is on my tongue you know it completely” (v. 4).
God knows you better than you know yourself There are many times when you do not understand yourself, but never a time when He doesn’t Below are three important things God knows about you that you don’t know yourself.
God knows Your Possibilities.
He knows what you are made of: “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb” (v. 13). Even more astonishingly, “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (v. 16). God knows what you can become, what you can accomplish and what you can handle. The best thing you will ever do for yourself is to put your life and future into God’s hands so He can lead you to become what He knows you can be.
God Knows Your Limitations
All of us are different and so are our load limits. God knows what you can do and what you cannot handle. He has made a very important promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13: “When you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand under it.” God will never fail you, if you follow Him.
God Knows Your Need
Just like little children, we do not always understand what is good for us. What a blessing that we can trust our God to meet all of our needs according to His wisdom and His riches (Romans 8:26-28). How wonderful that my Father in heaven understands me personally and intimately and that His hand is upon me for good.
How should I respond to a God who knows everything about me but still loves me? Lord, I want you to know me completely! “Search me, Oh God, and know my heart…see if there is any offensive way in me” (vv. 23-24). God knows your heart. He knows you from top to bottom, even when you don’t know your own heart. The prophet said, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9). Only God can know it
The Hebrew word for search means to dig in a mine and fine ore. “Search me, O God, I am like a mine. I am deep, but dig out the potential that is in me. Dig out all the treasure you have put into me, even before I was born.”
As we continue in this season of fasting and prayer, may this be the request of our heart: “Search me, oh God.” David goes on to say, “Test me . . . see if there is any wicked way in me” (v. 24) Test speaks of testing metal in a furnace. Finally, he says “Lead me in the way everlasting” (v. 24).
Here are three penetrating requests: search me, try me and lead me. As you pray these prayers sincerely, God will bring out of the mine of your life treasures that will bring glory to His name.
