The Promise of Christmas

In December 2000 I had sent an email to all my friends with the title “Unto Us a Child is born’ and mentioned about the birth of our first-born, Nathan. Some didn’t pay attention to the email thinking it to be just “another Christmas article.” Thus, they didn’t know about the birth of our son - until they met us or called us later.

Isaiah prophesied the birth of Jesus Christ in 740 BC. He declared…

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son,

and will call him Immanuel.”- Isaiah 7:14

The Prophet Isaiah prophesied more about Jesus Christ than any other prophets or writers in the Old Testament. Of all Israel's celebrated prophets, Isaiah is the king. We could say that Isaiah is the Paul of the Old Testament.

This prophecy speaks of Christmas.

The Sign “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:”

This conception was to be a “sign” to the house of David. The normal conception of a “young married woman” would hardly be considered a “sign.”

The Conception “The virgin will conceive…”

That virgin was Mary and she conceived supernaturally. This was totally unheard off. Never has a virgin ever conceived – except Mary! The Gospels according to Matthew and Luke both clearly record that Mary had conceived miraculously – as a direct action of the Holy Spirit without a male intervention at all (Matthew 1:18–25; Luke 1:34).

In response to Mary’s question, “How will this be?” Gabriel says, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” The angel encourages Joseph to not fear marrying Mary with these words: “What is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20).

Matthew 1:18 confirms the fulfillment of that prophesy. “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.”

The Son “…and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

This Virgin was going to give birth to a ‘Son’ and his name was ‘Immanuel’ meaning “God with us.”

Jesus was not born in sin; that is, He had no sin nature (Hebrews 7:26). It would seem that the sin nature is passed down from generation to generation through the father (Romans 5:12, 17, 19). The Virgin Birth circumvented the transmission of the sin nature and allowed the eternal God to become a perfect man.

God always keeps His Promise. He sent Jesus into our world in order to “save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21
