My Body is His Temple

People treat their bodies differently. We have all heard people say: "It's my body" and "I can do what I want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else."

Some people tend to be casual with their bodies and they really don’t care. They tend to sleep longer, hang out lazily and even eat unhealthily. Few others abuse their bodies by smoking, drinking and indulging in drugs or immoral lifestyle. While others tend to be cautious and take good care of their own bodies. They exercise and keep themselves fit. Some go on a strict diet just to look great. They are very careful of what they eat and how much they eat.
Some are happy the way they look while others are unhappy about their own bodies. What does the Bible say about our bodies?
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit,
who is in you, whom you have received from God?
You are not your own; you were bought at a price.
Therefore honour God with your bodies. I Cor. 6:19,20
The Scripture is very clear… Our Bodies matter to God. Why?
1. God Created our Body.
In Genesis 2:7 God formed man from the dust of the earth and breathed into him the breath of life. He was made in the image of God.
God gave each of us a body – when we are formed in our mother’s womb.
Ps. 139:13 “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” God created you. So, accept yourself the way you are. By criticising your body or your looks, you could be indirectly blaming your Creator.
2. God Values our Bodies.
Our Bodies matter to God. He bought it with His own precious blood. “You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honour God with your body” (1 Cor. 6:19-20)
Friends, we are a Spirit, we have a soul and we live in a body. Some day we will be separated from our earthly bodies and be given a resurrected body. But now, God expects us to take care of our bodies.
3. Our Body is God’s Property.
“The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord” (vs. 13). Our culture teaches us that we can do whatever we want with our bodies.
Vs. 19 & 20 declares that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. A temple is a place where the presence of God dwells. In the Old Testament God dwelt in the Most Holy Place of the Temple. But when Jesus was crucified, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom. (Matt. 27:51) The Holy presence of God no longer dwells in temples made by human hands but in the hearts of those who know Jesus Christ as their Saviour.
God the Father created our bodies, God the Son redeemed them, and God the Holy Spirit indwells them. The body of the believer is NOW the very temple of the Holy Spirit. We are to glorify God through our bodies by keeping ourselves pure and holy for God.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy,
to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God
- this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1
