The Ministry of the Elderly

Welcome to Caleb’s Sunday!

Agatha Christie on one occasion wrote that she had married an archaeologist. And someone asked, “Why would you marry an archaeologist?” to which she replied, "Because the older I get, the more he'll appreciate me."

India has a concept of ‘honoring the elderly’ that is so Biblical.

We are commanded to honor the elderly.

Leviticus 19:32 “Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.”

The gray head is a crown of glory. Somebody old who has walked in godliness for a lifetime, who has fought the battle over and over and has been victorious is a real treasure - a treasure of wisdom, experience and understanding.

Titus 2:2-5 gives a job description for the elderly.

Admonition to the OLDER MEN (Vs. 2)

    • Be temperate.

    • Be Men worthy of respect.

    • Be self-controlled.

    • Be sound in faith, in love and in endurance.

Admonition to the OLDER WOMEN (Vs. 3)

    • Be reverent in the way you live.

    • Do not be slanderers.

    • Do not be addicted to much wine.

    • You ought to teach what is good.

The elderly women are further given a specific command and responsibility in verses 4 & 5.

They are to urge the younger women to….

    • Love their husbands and children.

    • Be self-controlled and pure.

    • Be busy at home.

    • Be kind.

    • Be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

In Psalm 71:17&18 the Psalmist says…

“Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.”

“Those who can best declare the character of God are those who have walked with Him the longest.”
