Let Us Pray
No one has given more encouragement to praying than did Jesus. The followers of Christ were both encouraged to pray and taught how to pray. They constantly saw the example Jesus set in praying, and they noted the direct relationship between the powerful ministry of Jesus and His devout life of prayer.
Jesus considered prayer more important than food, for the Bible says that hours before breakfast, "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed" (Mark 1:35).
For Jesus, prayer was more important than speaking to great crowds of people: "…crowds of people came to hear Him, and to be healed of their sicknesses: " But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Luke 5:15-16).
Those precious hours spent with His heavenly Father meant more to Jesus than sleep:
"Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent all night praying to God" (Luke 6:12).
As a companion to prayer, Jesus encouraged his disciples to fast. “When you fast…” (Matthew 6:16-17). Fasting is not unique to Christians; people of all religions have times of fasting. The difference is in purpose and motive Our abstinence from food is for spiritual purposes. It is more than the ultimate crash diet for the body, it is a soul-strengthening exercise to align our hearts with the heart of God. Fasting helps to discipline the appetites of the body (Luke 21:34) and keep our spiritual priorities straight. There is something about fasting that sharpens the edge of our intercession and gives passion to our prayers.
In Matthew 6:16-18 Jesus is speaking of a private fast. However, today we are calling for a congregational fast as described in Joel 2:15-19 ”Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly. . .then the Lord will be jealous for His land and take pity on his people.” There are burdens we have carried for a long time. There are requests we have made to God so often and seemingly the prayers have not yet been answered. Let us keep praying, for the answer may be very near.
As we enter this season of fasting and prayer, below are the opportunities available for you to gather each morning for a time of united prayer:
