Imagine a serene, calm, stream of water flowing peacefully down a rocky pebbly stretch; as you look up imagine seeing a green lofty hillside all around with no sign of activity for miles! Are you able to picture that? Pretty easy isn’t it! When you look at still waters in a picturesque setting like that, you end up seeing your reflection. STILL WATERS - - there’s something about them! The mere thought of them brings you peace and calm, with no worldly distractions.

Psalm 23:2 emphasizes that He not only feeds us on green pastures but also leads us beside still waters. In the Hebrew language, the words for ‘still waters’ mee menuchoth, means, ‘restful waters or refreshment.’ Our Shepherd wants to lead us to a place of rest, a place of trust, a place of confidence, a place where you rely on Him and focus on Him without anything that will distract you. He wants to take the “heavy load” from your life and replace it with His peace and rest.

One important thing to note in this verse is the fact we need water. Our Good Shepherd leads us to the place of rest, but before that, He leads us to a place where we can quench our thirst. Without water, one cannot survive for very long; water is a necessity for life and without it, we would die. Jesus said, “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For my yoke is easy, and my load is light.” Matt 11:28-30.

1. He guides us through the Spirit: In the scriptures we see that in the hot climate, the vital part of a shepherd’s job is to provide water for his flock. Sometimes shepherds water their flocks from a well, pouring the water into troughs so that the sheep can drink. (Genesis 29:1-3) Particularly in the rainy season, however, the area around small streams and rivers provides peaceful, “well-watered resting-places.”​ The "still waters" are the influences and graces of his blessed Spirit...His Spirit attends us in various operations, like waters to cleanse, to refresh, to fertilize, and to cherish.

2. The waters do not cause fear: Did you know that a dog will drink from a turbulent stream. A sheep will not. He does not lead us to waters that roar and make a noise, enough to frighten a fearful sheep, but leads us to waters that are "still" and quiet. Still waters are the opposite of great rivers, which both terrify the sheep with their noise, and expose them to the danger of being carried away by their swift and violent streams.

3. Still Waters run deep: It teaches us the depth of His calm presence. All of us know that nothing is noisier than an empty drum. The Holy Spirit meets with the souls of his saints. He does not lead us to the raging waves of strife; the Spirit of God leads His chosen sheep to peaceful streams of holy love. He is a dove, not an eagle; the dew, not the hurricane. Our Lord leads us beside these "still waters;" we could not go there of ourselves. We need His guidance, therefore it is said, "He leadeth me." He does not drive us. He leads us by his example, and the gentle drawing of His love.

The above paragraphs clearly indicate that still waters are waters of rest that God alone can give. It is water the sheep love to drink of because it is devoid of danger and is refreshing.
