Discovering the Real Meaning of Christmas
Christmas is a time of joy. There are Christmas trees, stars, mangers, nativity scenes, fun… everyone is in a mood to celebrate.
If you were to ask people the real meaning of Christmas, you would get a variety of responses - such as…
-
It’s a time of celebration
-
It’s a time with family and friends
-
It’s a holiday season
-
It’s a time for good food, parties and cakes
-
It’s a time for music and carolling
-
It’s a time for shopping for new clothes.
But, what is Christmas all about?
1. Christmas is a Historical Event
Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus Christ. This historical event took place in the little town of Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. Though the actual date of Christ's birth is not mentioned, Christmas is as real as our own birthdays. Apart from biblical history, Jewish history too bears witness that this event actually took place in Israel.
The baby that lay in the manger was the miracle we call the incarnation. Jesus was born to Virgin Mary. God became man without ceasing to be God. The Eternal Creator of the world became a Child of time.
2. Christmas is Good News for ALL People
Luke 2: 10 -11 "But the angel said unto them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for ALL the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.'"
Christmas brings the greatest news ever known to man. Christmas proclaims that God loves each one of us and He is interested to save us. This Christmas Baby went on to live a sinless life and then die a sacrificial death to save ALL mankind from their sins. Only the blood of Jesus can completely wash us of our sin.
1 Timothy 1:15b "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners."
3. Christmas has to be Personally Experienced
You can never fully celebrate Christmas until you celebrate it with Jesus Christ. Someone put it this way: “The Most important thing about Christmas is the first six letters. Christ makes Christmas meaningful.”
God became man so we could become the sons and daughters of God.
John 1:12 “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
Have you truly experienced Christmas this year? It’s plain and simple: Just invite Jesus Christ into your life as your Saviour and Lord. He will come into your heart, wash all of your sins and make you His own. That’s REAL Christmas!
